HRH The Prince of Wales visits Surrey

The Lord-Lieutenant received Prince William when he visited visited 2024 Earthshot Prize Finalist, NatureMetrics, a UK based nature company which enables companies to measure and report on their impact on nature and ecosystems. Using its unique technology, it has revolutionised the scale and accessibility of nature data collection through environmental DNA (eDNA), helping commercial and conservation organisations make more informed choices to better protect and maintain biodiverse ecosystems.
NatureMetrics was a Finalist in the 2024 “Protect & Restore Nature” category of The Earthshot Prize.
Since becoming a Finalist, NatureMetrics has secured a $25 million investment, raised with support from The Earthshot Prize’s investment platform Launchpad.
The company uses environmental DNA (eDNA) found in our surroundings to identify individual species using easy-to-collect water, air or soil samples. This eDNA then offers a detailed picture of a site’s biodiversity and a full spectrum of life, including anything from bacteria to blue whales. This then enables businesses to understand the natural world around their operations and make informed operational and financial decisions, driving a shift towards a more sustainable global economy.
During the visit, The Prince watched a demonstration of the NatureMetrics eDNA sampling process at its on-site lake. His Royal Highness was joined by local schoolchildren who were learning about The Earthshot Prize as part of their studies, and science communicator ‘Big Manny’. Big Manny, a 27-year-old science-first content creator and music artist, who is collaborating with The Earthshot Prize to bring the exciting environmental solutions spotlighted by The Prize to young people across the world.
The Prince then visited the laboratories where all samples are analysed and viewed a demonstration of the NatureMetrics Intelligence platform, the customer platform on which they can view their biodiversity health insights. Here, His Royal Highness saw examples of the biodiversity that has been uncovered in projects around the world through this innovative technology. Before departing, The Prince met existing and future partners of NatureMetrics, as well as staff working on site.
NatureMetrics currently has over 600 clients operating in more than 110 countries across multiple industries. The new $25 million of funding announced this month was raised through a consortium of investors led by JustClimate. Four of these investors are part of The Earthshot Prize’s investment platform Launchpad, and proceeds from the round will be used to enhance NatureMetrics nature data platform, expand its international reach, and scale its solution to meet the increasing data requirements of its corporate and conservation customers.
