King’s Award for Voluntary Service Presentation to Addlestone Canoe Club

On Saturday 15th March, The Lord-Lieutenant presented the Chair of Addlestone Canoe Club, Mrs Carol Reeves, with their King’s Awad for Voluntary Service. With their citation read by Deputy Lieutenant, Brigadier Paul Evans OBE, and attendance by the Chairman of Surrey County Council and the Mayor of Runnymede.

Based on the edge of the Wey Navigation, Addlestone Canoe Club has been established for over 30 years and is run entirely by volunteers, it welcomes all those interested in paddle sports, from White Water to Sprint and Marathon Racing, to Canoe Touring and Stand- Up Paddle Boarding (SUP).

The club also offers activities and volunteering opportunities to groups of young people such as the Scouts (800 engage each year) and Duke of Edinburgh participants. They offer individual engagement to young people with additional educational needs. The club has been a provider of paddling activities in Runnymede Wellness Week for the last three years. The input of local councillor and volunteer, Dolcie Clark, with this scheme, and her knowledge of the Community Fund for Surrey’s Strategic Transformation Programme and of the areas of greatest deprivation in the area, enables the club to reach participants who benefit strongly from the individual and caring ethos of the club, including those with SEND, those who qualify for Free School Meals, and those who generally lack the opportunity to engage in activities of this type.

The club is key in raising awareness and training around water safety in Runnymede, which is a high-risk area for drowning. The club is also a key partner with the National Trust in clearing the navigation from an invasive species Pennywort. They offer an opportunity for the participants to spend time in nature in an area which is in the top 45% of most densely populated local authority areas.
